Hobby Night March 29th, 2013 : A Night of Winners

First of all, a huge congratulation to Subhan, for being crowned the Legio Malaysia 40K League 4 Champion. Subhan's necron force managed to swept all before him with such impunity and fanaticism that he even bagged the League Fanatic award .  This well deserved victory earned him his first ever Legio Purity Seal. Well done good sir!

Best Painted for the League as voted by his peers went to Faizal Sani for his beautifully painted Space Wolves army.

Best Sportsmanship, also as voted by his peers went to Mr. Mark, nice guy, Smith. Mark placed third in the final league standing. Being voted best sportsman speaks volume to his approach of this game that we all love.

Congratulations to all the winners. And thank you to everyone who took part in the League.

Last Friday was also the Fast Attack throwdown. After all the votes were tallied, Faizal Azlan came out tops with his amazingly painted Nurgle Blight Drone. Other than the obviously astonishing paintjob, his effort in constructing a cinematic base was probably the deciding factor in attracting votes, slightly edging Goh's Night Lords Heldrake.

And here are the rest of the Fast Attack Throwdown participants.
2nd Place - Night Lords Heldrake
3rd Place - Eldar Vyper
Dark Eldar Reaver Jetbike
IG Vendetta
Well done and a very big thank you to all the participants for finishing and entering their Fast Attack choice. Inspiring work and magnificent dedication. You are all winners to us :)

The Kill Team playtesting games were also in progress. Stay tuned for battle reports by Mark Smith, coming soon on Legio Malaysia.

Ave Legio!

Season 3 40K League a Wrap!

Well, this past Saturday we wrapped it all up with a hard fought Championship round. Howls of pain and bloodlust echoed through the halls, and a winner emerged from the darkness. Please extend your congratulations to Iskazri I. for becoming the first two-time 40K League Champion! Huzzah! He defeated Faizal's nasty Imperial Guard force in truly Orky fashion. Well done.

In addition, here are the other Season 3 winners:

Marksman's Honor: Khairul E.

Khairul won the Wild Card Tournament, securing the 4th and final seed in last Saturday's Championship with 3 convincing wins. Despite losing to Iskazri in the first round of the Championships, Khairul played his Saim-Hann Eldar well!

Best Sportsman: Azlan R.

Whether he was winning or losing, Azlan was a cheerful opponent with a fantastic themed Ravenwing army. I fought him to a draw in the league with my Unclean host, and it was the most fun I had in the league. Kudos!

Best Appearance: Khairul E.

I think it was pretty obvious to all that he deserved this award. His Saim-Hann Eldar look fantastic, and he got it done in a short time to boot. Huzzah!

League Fanatic: Alvin K.

Alvin played 11 games in his first league, getting in as many as could at each opportunity. He played a tough, nice looking Alpha Legion army that also scored high in the appearance category. Nicely done!

We'll be handing out all the trophies for these mighty champions, including the Purity Seal, on the first day of the next 40K league. Have a look at the polls below and click on your vote for the points total and dates for the next league. While these results are non-binding, we will definitely take them into strong consideration when we announce the next league.

Congrats to all who participated. Until next time...

Early Close at Hobby Night Tonight

Hey folks,

Hobby Night will end at about 11:30 this evening, so please plan your attendance and gaming accordingly. I'll be back first thing Saturday morning for the championships, and I need my beauty sleep! ;)

Legio Malaysia members are welcome to come to the factory Saturday morning and check out the League Championships, as well as play games or hobby models. This will last until the championships end, which should be around 3 pm.

Cheers guys

Who Shall Win the Marksman's Honour?

Well folks, it'll be one of these league die-hards:

Faizal S.
Khairul A.
Shazli M.
Khairul E.
Nazrin M.
Iqbal
Arzmi D.
Johan R.
Tay J.

Now, as a couple of you have mentioned, there are an odd number of competitors. My oh my, what shall we do...?

Well, we're going to use a "bottom bye" system. Assuming everyone shows up, the player with the worst regular season record will get a bye in the first round. All byes will be worth a 15 pt win. In subsequent rounds, the player with the worst overall standing will get the bye. With so few players in this tournament, I'm guessing that the overall winner of this tournament is going to need to win all three games. This means that players in Rounds 2 and 3 who get the bye are unlikely to win the tournament- if things go normally. If there are a lot of ties, who knows? Despite the drawbacks, this system is a good one for tournaments that involve a relatively low number of players. Therefore, assuming everyone shows up on time Saturday, here are the Round 1 matchups...

Faizal S. vs Johan R.
Khairul A. vs Arzmi D.
Shazli M. vs Iqbal
Khairul E. vs Nazrin M.

BYE- Tay J.

Subsequent rounds shall be seeded according to our standard swiss tournament system- winners against winners, losers against losers. Scoring will be done just like the league, except no bonus point will be added for fully painted armies. All other bonuses/penalties apply to your scores. No Sportsmanship or Appearance will be taken in this tournament. Once we get your battle points from all three games, I'll add your league averages in Sportsmanship and Appearance from the regular season to get an Overall Score. This is the score that will win (or lose) you the Marksman's Honour.

Everyone needs to get to the factory by 0945 at the latest. If you are late, and we have an even numbers of players... let's just say your tournament experience may have ended before it started! :) Tay, this means you need to show up early in case we have a no show, and you actually end up playing in the first round. If not, I suggest bringing a book or some models to paint! That goes for the rest of you- bring something to entertain yourselves if you end up being one of the people that gets a bye.

So, that's about it. If anyone has any questions or concerns, by all means drop me a line and we'll see what can be done. Once we determine the Wild Card winner, I'll contact all 4 League Champion finalists to determine whether we're running the championships on the 4th or the 11th. I've already heard that some can't make the 4th, so hopefully all four of you can make the 11th. I have one other possible option that will work with league guidelines, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it, as they say.

Don't forget folks that there will be no Hobby Night tomorrow. Hobby Night will resume on April 3rd...

League coming to a close, and a new range you haven't heard of...

Well Legionnaires, the Second Season of the Legio Malaysia Warhammer 40,000 league is coming to a close. Lots of games have been played, armies finished, and dice chucked to reach the end. We've also got some news for historical fans, but first let's review the league's current status:

Players have until the end of Hobby Night this Friday to complete their league matches. Only Syamael, Jeff, and Kadir have failed to reach six games up to this point. Get those games in!

According to Legio's records, Khairul A. and Arzmi have completed their minimum six games (or more), but do not have fully painted armies. You all have until the end of Hobby Night to show either Jeff or Azlan your completely painted armies. If you fail to do so, you will not be invited to participate in the Wild Card Tournament. Speaking of...

The Wild Card Tournament is being held at Battlefront Miniatures on Saturday, March 28th at 10:00 AM. This date has been set since we posted the league rules, so we will NOT be changing the date to another time. We apologize if this date doesn't work for you, but we have given everyone two months notice. If you have played at least six games and have a fully painted army (i.e. your stat line is green), please RSVP for the Wild Card Tournament by emailing Legio Malaysia or let us know at the upcoming Hobby Night. All players must RSVP no later than Wednesday, March 25th.

The League Championships will be held on Saturday, April 4th at 10:00 AM. If all four players are unable to make it on this date, we will reschedule for a week later. If all four players are unable to make that one, we will revert to the April 4th date. Anyone who fails to show up by 10:00 AM for the League Championships will automatically forfeit their match. We will determine League Championship seeding after the Wild Card Tournament. All invitees will be emailed and SMSed in an attempt to confirm attendance.

So, that's a wrap for Season 2. We invite comments concerning the scheduling and details of Season 2- feel free to email Legio Malaysia with your suggestions. The league will continue to evolve and hopefully grow. Congrats to all who have been able to participate thus far.

Now, on to a completely different genre- English Civil War!

Hot off the presses of Warlord Games comes a completely new range of miniatures for this very cool and interesting period. They are doing a full, multi part plastics range that looks very impressive, and it's all set to launch at the end of this month. If you're an historical miniatures fan, especially of the ECW, be sure to click on the image above and check out Warlord Games!
That's all for today, folks. Cheers!

Congrats to Jason- Flames of War League Champion!

This past week four brave souls battled it out to determine who would become Legio Malaysia's first Flames of War league champion, and Jason prevailed! Beating Nick in the first round, and then Edwin in the final game, Jason led his Americans to victory in two close games. Well done!

Join us on Hobby Night, March 20th, as we hand out awards for the Flames of War Season 1 league, AND we launch our Firestorm: Bagration campaign. It's a must attend night for all Flames of War fans! Free drinks and snacks will be supplied as well, so be sure to pencil in that date.

Cheers!

FoW League Championships Rescheduled

Yes indeed, we have moved the date for the final showdown! We have confirmed with all players that Saturday, February 28th at 11 AM is the date we'll fight it out and determine who the League Champion will be.

As I mentioned before, if you were a member of the Flames of War League, or are an active Legio Malaysia member, you are invited to attend the Championships at Battlefront Miniatures. Come cheer them all on as they fight for glory, and the chance to be immortalized in the "Hall of Legends"!

Cheers

40K League in Full Swing

With Week 1 in the books, we're easily on pace to exceed last season's total of both players and games played. If the recruitment and games continue at the rate we're at, this should be a mighty season indeed for Warhammer 40,000.

I thought I'd take a quick moment to explain how the posted league stats work, particularly how players are ranked, and what the colors all mean. If you've never seen our format before, I can see how it might be a bit confusing...

All players in Legio Malaysia leagues are ranked by their League Point Average, or LPA. This score is derived from the final game results after applying bonus and penalty points to both players. We take the total amount of League Points earned, and divide it by the number of games played. This yields the LPA, and it is this score that is used to rank you up against the other members of the league. Sportsmanship and Appearance scores have no bearing on this whatsoever- league ranking is based solely on your army's combat performance. We then sort these scores to determine the current rankings.

However, before we post these rankings, we also have something we check these scores against. To be ranked, players must be current in their "Games Played". All Legio Malaysia leagues operate on a one game per week minimum basis. So, for the current six week 40K league, each player needs to have played a minimum of 6 games to qualify for the League Championships. While these games can be played any time, we do track the stats based on the pace of one per week.

So, to determine what the minimum games are to be current, we simply take the current league week we're in (Week 2 as of this post), and subtract one from that number. This means, as of today, that each player in the league should have played at least one game. In Week 3 each played should have played 2, and so on. If any player has not played enough games to be "on pace", their LPA is NOT counted for league ranking. Their data line is highlighted in red, and a " - " appears in their ranking. As soon as the player in question gets up to the minimum games, we immediately update the sheet and rank that player.

So, with all that in mind, we rank and post the results. For reference, we also color code data lines based on a few conditions:

If a player's data line has white text, that player has played at least the minimum number of games needed to be current, and is ranked.

If a player's data line is red, that means the player has NOT played enough games to stay current, and is unranked.

If a player's data line is green, that means the player has played at least six games, and has a fully painted army. The player in question has met all requirements for potential participation in the Wild Card Tournament and/or the League Championships. That player does not need to play any more games if they do not wish.

If a player's data line is yellow, that means the player has played at least six games, but for some reason does not qualify for the finals. In virtually all cases, this means the player does not have a fully painted army. If the army does not get painted before the end of the regular season (midnight, March 20th in the current league), the player will not be eligible to participate in the Wild Card Tournament and/or the League Finals.

So folks, that's how we do it. If you have any questions or comments about this, feel free to post a reply. We'll get you sorted pronto.

Cheers

I'm pleased to announce that Shaun W. is the winner of our Wild Card spot in the League Championships. This will be held this Saturday, 11 AM sharp, at Battlefront Miniatures Malaysia. Week 4 and Season 2 Just Around the Corner

Hola Legionnaires!

This Friday promises to be an exciting Hobby Night!

For the Flames of War league, Friday marks the beginning of the 4th and final week of the regular season. Thus far, Edwin has managed to stay on top, but who knows what will happen in the final week? Nick has not only finished his minimum games- he's also got a two game lead for the League Fanatic award. Sweet!

With the league starting to wind down, I thought I'd recap what Legio Malaysia's upcoming plans are for Flames of War fans. Next month we'll be launching the much-anticipated Firestorm: Bagration campaign. This will kick off on Friday, March 20th at Hobby Night. If you plan on participating, please make plans to attend Hobby Night that night. We'll be conducting a pre-campaign briefing, and we'll be electing the commanding generals for the German and Soviet armies. So, if you want a say, or even want to be one of the generals, you gotta show up! Remember, ANY late war army may be played for this campaign. It's not just for German and Soviet players!

The very next morning on Saturday, March 21st we'll be running our first Flames of War Legio Tournament. This will be a 3 round, 1500 pt. Late War tournament. The rules packet for this will be done by Hobby Night, and posted in the downloads section.

Now, on to the 40K madness!

Friday begins the second season of the Warhammer 40,000 league. We are now accepting registrations, so if you want to get into Friday action as quickly as possible, be sure to pre register. Remember, ForgeWorld and scratch built models MUST be approved before you play your first game, so get those submissions in if you plan to use them.

The first night of a league also calls for something else- awards! The Season One winners will receive their trophies and applause at 9:00 PM this Friday. We'll even have drinks and snacks to commemorate this special occasion, so be sure to make it if you can!

That's about it for the league news. The last thing I want to mention relates to club matters specifically. We are working out a good time to have a proper club meeting. Gaming and circumstances have prevented us from holding a proper meeting for a long time, and we're well past due to have a good round table discussion. There are a lot of things we'd like to bring up to the membership, and as we get closer to our Birthday Celebration in May we need to get some help and preparation lined up. So, keep your ears to the ground for a time/place announcement on the site.

Thanks a bunch, and see you Friday!

League Updates

We have a little news here for participants of both the current Flames of War league, as well as next week's launch of the 40K 2nd season.

First off, after midnight tonight we are no longer accepting registrations for the Flames of War Season 1 league. We've just passed the half way point, with only two weeks left! Be sure to get your 4 games (minimum) in, and get those armies painted if you haven't already.

For our 40K players, today starts your eligibility to submit your army list for the upcoming league. Starting today, feel free to email your list in through the blog. If you haven't read the rules yet, we strongly encourage you to do so. There are a few changes from last season, including one made to registration.

For Season 2, if you are not a member of Legio Malaysia, participation in the league will cost you RM15.00. I'm sure many of you would prefer a price of RM 0.00, but please keep in mind we are a club, not a shop. We need funds to provide you guys with tables, terrain, trophies, tshirts, etc. We appreciate your understanding, and sincerely thank you for your support by joining the league.

You might also want to consider becoming a member! For members, leagues are ALWAYS free, and you can join Legio Malaysia for as little as RM10.00 a month. If this sounds like it's your cup of tea, pop by any Hobby Night and we'll get you squared away.

That's it for this post, folks. See you tonight!

FoW League Week 1 in the Books

Congrats to Nick C. for jumping out to an early lead in the league standings, and congrats to Damien and Kian (both from Singapore) for taking the lead for League Fanatics with 3 games played in Week 1. Nice job!

Fortunately, it looks like all of the off site games that were pending have been resolved just before the deadline. Remember, any off site games that get played in Week 2 MUST be reported by both parties before midnight Thursday. If you have any questions about this, let me know.

League stats below are fully updated with all of the games I've been made aware of. I'm really looking forward to this evening- we should have a new North Africa themed table up and running, and we'll also have 3 Eastern Front tables set aside for the exclusive use of Flames of War league members.

Also, I thought I'd take a moment to mention an interesting "intersection" in Legio Malaysia's activity calendar. Please note that Season 2 of the 40K league begins on February 6th. We'll have free snacks and drinks (Flames of War league players are more than welcome to partake of this as well), as well as an awards ceremony for the Season 1 winners. It promises to be a huge night with a lot of people vying for table space. We plan on having 10 gaming tables set up, but with both leagues running on that day I'm sure it will be tight.

That's about it for this update. See you guys tonight!

New league feature- the weekly email

Howdy folks!

Starting with the current Flames of War league, we will now send out a weekly email for all of our leagues. These emails will let folks know league relevant news, notify you of schedule changes, and will generally be the voice of the league. If you're a league member, or plan on playing in any of our leagues, be sure to add our email to your "safe senders" list so we don't end up in the spam folder!

Flames of War league players, please check your email. If you don't see it, drop us a line and we'll get you sorted.

Cheers!

Excellent Start to the league!

Wow! We had a whopping 24 people show up to Friday Hobby Night, with games of all sorts being played through the night. Among these, 4 games of Flames of War were played for the league. Nice! We were a little short of terrain/tables for Flames of War, so Legio Malaysia will light the forges once again next week and get some more options together for Flames of War players. Fear not!

We've also started to see some off-site results trickle in from Saturday's Cempaka School event. As soon as those get validated they will be posted as well. For now though, the results posted on the table below are completely current.

Have fun, and play those games!

Jeff

Flames of War League Starts Today!

The wait is over, and today officially starts Legio Malaysia's first Flames of War league. For all of you out there playing in a Legio activity for the first time, welcome!

I thought I'd make a quick post reminding everyone of a few things that might crop up. We strive to run a completely objective league, with consistent standards and fair play throughout. We strongly recommend you thoroughly read the league rules pack if you haven't done so already. It contains just about everything you need to participate and have a great time. One thing I thought I'd briefly recap is off site gaming.

Any game that is not played in the presence of a League Admin (which is either myself or Azlan Ramli) is considered to be played "off site". Normally, when you play a game at Legio's Hobby Night, after the game is done both players fill out 1 results sheet and turn it in to either me or Azlan. Then, one at a time, they each confidentially report the scores for Sportsmanship and Appearance they would like to give to their opponent. We record the results, they get keyed into the master score sheet, and neither player ever knows what the other gave them. Playing off site, we have to do things a bit differently.

When you play off site, as many of you will do tomorrow at Cempaka School, the process is slightly different. Once the game is finished, both players should figure out how many league points they each earned.

EXAMPLE:

Let's say Joe and Bob played a game, and Joe won. Joe gets 15 points for a win, plus one for destroying Bob's Company HQ for a total of 16 points. Bob lost, so Bob gets 5 points for that. Bob didn't earn any bonus points, so Bob's final score is 5. Both players take note of each other's scores, shake hands, and go on with their gaming afternoon.

That evening, Joe gets on the computer and writes an email to Legio Malaysia that should go something like this:

"Hi, this is Joe, and I played a league game today against Bob. I won the game and killed Bob's company HQ, so I earned 16 points. Bob didn't get any bonus points, so he got a total of 5. He was a great sport, so I have him a 10 for Sportsmanship, and his army looks really good so his Appearance is an 8. I attached the results form that has all this in it. Cheers!"

Bob writes an email like this:

"Hi, this is Bob, and I got my butt kicked today by Joe's Germans. He killed my company HQ, so his total was 16, and I didn't earn any bonus so my score is a 5. I gave him a 7 for Sportsmanship and a 9 for Appearance. I attached the sheet as well. Cheers"

It's very important that each of you report BOTH scores- this serves as a "check and balance" to make sure the correct scores are reported. This also preserves the anonymity of the appearance and sportsmanship scores you wish to assign. Attaching the results form (available on the right in the gaming downloads section) will help make scoring that much easier, and regardless needs to be send with your email if at all possible. At a bare minimum (in case you don't have Excel), we need the two scores, and the appearance/sportsmanship scores you wish to assign to your opponent.

The last things I wanted to clarify is that for a game to be official BOTH PLAYERS must be members of the league, and you can't play the same player more than once. We do this to prevent someone from playing the same beginner player 10 times, beating him 10 times, and getting into the League Championship that way. :)

So, everyone enjoy and have a blast with the league. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to drop us a line and we'll sort you out. Hopefully we'll see all of you sometime soon at Hobby Night!

Cheers,

Jeff

40K League Season 2- Feb 6th

Yes indeed fellow Legionnaires, the second season of our Warhammer 40,000 league is just around the corner!

For those interested in getting a jump start on the changes/requirements for Season 2- your calls have been answered. If you take a look to the right, you'll see the Season 2 40K Rules in our new gaming downloads section. Download and check it out. We've made two major changes, and have placed a stronger emphasis on another.

First, in the interests of diversity, we are allowing ForgeWorld models to be used in your league lists. That's right, if you've been itching to add your Repressor to your Sisters of Battle list, the time is now to crack it out! There are limitations- in the interests of game balance, flyers and super-heavy vehicles are not allowed. We're also not allowing creatures with Mass Points, like the Barbed Heirodule. Just about everything else is free game, as long as you're using the actual ForgeWorld model, and you have a copy of the rules for it. Check the league rules pack for complete details on this exciting new addition to the league.

Second, we've changed how the Wild Card gets seeded. Rather than being a random draw of all qualified participants (as we did in Season 1), this time around we have something much cooler in mind- a tournament! Check out the rules packet for full details on how you qualify for the Wild Card Tournament and hopefully win the Marksman's Honour and a seat at the League Championships!

Finally, we've had to put our "meanie" hats on and do a little "hobby enforcement" based on experiences from last season. In particular, we've made some clarifications and new rules related to conversions/scratch built models. We've also made some changes to how off-site gaming works. We love outstation folks to play, but record keeping was tough for us due to folks not following up with their after action reports properly. If you plan on playing games outside of Hobby Night, PLEASE carefully read the section on off-site gaming.

So, gear up and get ready! Don't forget that we'll have free drinks and snacks to celebrate the launch of Season 2, AND we'll be handing out trophies and other cool stuff to last season's winners. Ave Legio!

Firestorm: Bagration Campaign Postponed

Hola folks!

As many of you know, the much anticipated release of the Firestorm: Bagration campaign supplement has been delayed by Battlefront until the end of February. So, that means we need to reschedule the launch of our own campaign as well. The new start date for this will be Friday, March 20th.

While it's a shame that we had to delay, this does mean we get to do something extra that will the campaign that much more fun. We're still running a Flames of War tournament on March 21st, and now we're going to use the results of ALL of the tournament games to count towards Bagration results! So, besides victory or defeat in the tournament, your games will also have an impact on the campaign as well. Very cool! :)

Don't forget to submit your lists for the first season of Legio Malaysia's Flames of War league! Games start in two days, so be sure you get registered for the fun!

Cheers!

Jan 9 Hobby Night Cancelled

Hey folks,

I've just heard via the Warp that we will be unable to open Hobby Night this Friday. Unfortunate, I know, but things do indeed come up. I'm also still in the USA as I write this, visiting our esteemed comrades at Gale Force 9 in Earlysville, Virginia. These are the guys that make those really cool smoke, fire, and other tokens you've probably seen around. If you've never heard of them, definitely check out the link in the "Killer Hobby Links" section on the right. The make REALLY cool stuff.

I'll be back in Malaysia next week, and you all can rest assured that Hobby Night will indeed happen on Jan 16th so we can kick off the Flames of War league. In the meantime, get those models painted and lists submitted if you're interested. I'll be there with my Germans! :)

Cheers,

Jeff

The Final Week!

Well, the regular season of our first ever league is drawing to a close. All confirmed stats that have been sent in have been updated. Please remember that at midnight this Friday, the regular season will end. No more league games may be played after this point. Any results reported after midnight will be discarded. At midnight, we will determine the top three league players, and confirm they have painted armies. We will also do the wild card draw then, and announce who is going into the finals via the blog. Good luck to all!

World War II Comes To Legio Malaysia!

2009 promises to be a HUGE year for Legio Malaysia and Flames of War! We've planned not only a league and a Legio Tournament for FoW, but also our first-ever campaign with the impending release of Firestorm: Bagration. It's gonna be awesome!

Our first venture into war-torn WWII Europe will be our first season of Flames of War league action. You'll need to submit a 1500 pt, Late War list to join The League- we'll start accepting them on January 9th, and you can start playing games on January 16th. There is no fee to join the Season 1 Flames of War League, and games may be played anywhere, not just at Hobby Nights!

For the Season 1 FoW rules packet, click here.

For the Flames of War Legio Results sheet, click here.

In addition, we're running the Flames of War "Firestorm: Bagration" campaign starting February 13th. More details will come very soon for what promises to be an awesome time.

Finally, we'd also like to bring your attention to the next Legio Tournament, which will be a 1500 point Flames of War Late War tournament to be held on Saturday, March 21st. Themed for the Eastern Front during Operation: Bagration, this tournament should be a great time for all comers. Again, full details and a rules packet will come very soon for this tournament.

We're thrilled to be able to support this outstanding game system for our membership and for other hobbyists in Malaysia. For those who haven't tried it, there hasn't been a better time to get involved!

Cheers,

Jeff
