As many of you know, we had a club member meeting last Hobby Night. The primary topic of discussion was our future events schedule, and we came up with a few ideas. The one I'm most excited about is Iron Painter.
When I was still working for GW in the US, Iron Painter was the biggest event on my shop's calendar. It's a cool event, and we're doing it! Here's how it works:
Basically, it's an endurance painting event. In it's original concept, it's a 24 hour painting event, but for Legio we're keeping it instead to a managable 12 hours. You turn up to the event with at least 500 points of Warhammer, Warhammer 40,000, Lord of the Rings, or Flames of War miniatures. These models are assembled, based, and may be primed in one color. This force must consist of at least 20 models, and it must be a legal force. So, for instance, a 40K entry must consist of at least a HQ and 2 Troops selections from the codex of your choice.
You may not think it's possible, but in the "original" version it's 1000 points of models over 24 hours. Believe me, with a careful plan, a reasonable pallette, and dedication/focus, you CAN do it (and it not look like ass!) :)
So, join us on Saturday, February 20th for some painting madness. Clock starts at 10 AM sharp, and ends at 10 PM on the nose. Those who finish will be forever known as a Legio Iron Painter, and the winner (determined by popular vote) will get a Purity Seal for their well deserved victory.
Who's interested? Post and discuss!
EDIT: Assuming we get enough basic attendance, there will be three other "sub awards" available should you choose to be crazy enough to try them:
"Iron Skull"- Paint a 1000 point army of at least 30 models in the alloted time.
"Iron Halo"- Start the competition with all of your models sealed inside blisters and boxes- loose sprues and metal may not be used for this (as you could have prepped/cleaned them beforehand).
"Adamantium Mantle"- Complete requirements for both Iron Halo AND Iron Skull.
definitely interested..though I can't confirm participation yet since February, is still a long way to go..
ReplyDeletehmm..should I continue with the current armies I possess or should I build a new combat patrol army?
I'm in! Definitely! Just hope nothing comes in the way then. I really wanna do this sort of painting endurance stuff.
ReplyDeleteJeff, I just have a few questions, how would you count vehicles as?
ReplyDeleteAlso, are we supposed to glue the basing material there or we can bring it glued to the base?
Even though I asked about the vehicle, it might be reference for other people, as I'm gonna bring 1 Ork Warboss, 18 Ork Boyz and 7 Ork Nobz.
I'm in. Will apply for leave too. Time to get those models ordered in :)
ReplyDelete@Alvin- Not sure what you mean by "how would you count a vehicle"... it's a model if that's what you mean. It doesn't count as more than one.
ReplyDeleteI have a tentative 498 point army list for the Iron Painter. If I recall correctly there were additional special awards such as going for 1000 points or starting completely from the sprues? If so I might be able to aim for the "sprue fresh" award, since I still have a lot on sprues lol.
ReplyDeleteAlso Jeff, what's the ruling on using air brushes?
@Firaya- Good point- additional awards posted above. Note that 498 points does NOT qualify for Iron Painter, and loose sprues may not be used if you wish to try for the Adamantium Mantle. Loose sprues can be cleaned up prior to the start of the competition, and that's not allowed. Sealed boxes ensure the competitor is starting with "virgin" product...
ReplyDeleteAlso folks, bases may have all of their material already glued on them and sprayed in one color, but may not be drybrushed, inked, or painted on in any way prior to the start of the competition.
ReplyDelete@Firaya- There is no rule on using airbrushes- use one if you wish.
ReplyDeleteI'm in! And it's probably going to be Daemonhunters!!!
ReplyDeleteOh we're supposed to aim for 500 or more points for the Iron Painter? That would make it easier to manage, since I thought we were not allowed to go above that limit like normal army lists lol.
ReplyDeleteIn any case I missed the 20 model requirement in my first read through, so my 498-point list is illegal. I'll rework my list again at home.
That's because I was wondering what happens if someone brings 2 Land Raiders and 3 Rhinos or something...
ReplyDeleteLooking at the different sub-awards, I might want to rethink my painting list.
lol ... the rules are simple ... if it's 40k, it's going to have to be at least 500pts, legal list (at least 1 HQ, 2 troops) and at least 20 models. I'm thinking right now 1 Inquisitor, a squad of stormtroopers, a rhino and a squad of grey knights .. haven't really added that up yet
ReplyDeleteThis teaches me to read these things so early in the morning, I've missed the phrase "at least" twice already in the rulings. That would explain why my questions all seem so silly. Grrr.
ReplyDeleteLOL x2... I thought the rules were as simple as can be, but I guess I was wrong. I made some additional clarifications in the text above, but other than that I don't know what else to say. What happens if someone brings a bunch of vehicles? I guess they'll paint them, I would imagine. Use an airbrush. Paint as many vehicles as you wish. Try and find the saddest, lamest, beardiest, easiest, fill-in-the-blank possible list to win a "competition" that is INTENDED to be a fun way to start a new army. In the end, it really doesn't make a difference as long as you stick to the rules published above. I'll give it my best shot with an army that will actually take to the field one day. I can tell you all that much... :)
ReplyDelete@Firaya- You didn't miss the "at least" phrases. I added them after I realized people were going to take the R.A.W. approach to this thing, rather than applying a modicum of common sense lol. I understand that's how a large portion of the community thinks here, and I failed to account for that. Hopefully, the modified entry is precise enough to make things clear, and allow everyone to go on an even footing :)
ReplyDeleteow,,yeahhh,,im in..wohooo :D
ReplyDeletePersonally I view it as a way to get my models painted up. Since I will only paint more Ultramarines, they'll see use one day so I'm not worried about that hehe. I took a guess at what stuff I might have unopened and what is coming, and I might have 1100+ points with exactly 30 models. I'm just excited to get these things painted lol :D
ReplyDeleteI do have one habit that might deny me a Crux Terminatus though. I tend to unwrap and open boxes to make sure no bit is missing, and later on (lazily) leave everything on the sprue inside the boxes. If it must still be unopened then I might have to settle for the 1000 point award. If need be, I can bring the boxes and blisters I have in mind for review :D
@Shaz- In my mind you've got the right perspective on this thing. However, if you want Adamantium Mantle, those will have to be GW-sealed, unopened boxes and blisters at 10 AM to qualify. It's up to you, but personally I think it's more than tough enough to paint 1000 points in 12 hours without having to put them together as well. At 30 models, you only have 24 minutes for each one. Building AND painting at that speed (without the model looking like a 4 year old painted it) is VERY tough. Believe me, I've been there with my VC army and it was one of the toughest hobby feats I've personally accomplished.
ReplyDeleteStill, if you want to have a go, bring those unopened boxes come Saturday and take a crack at it... :)
@subhan- What are you painting dude?
ReplyDelete@Jeff: Hmmm you're right, I didn't take into account how much time assembly would take. I'll take a closer look at the boxes I have at home. If the majority of the models that I intend to paint up for the Iron Painter are already opened, I'll get them ready for painting day and just aim for the Iron Halo.
ReplyDeleteI just hope I don't run out of gas and fail to even pass the minimum target lol :D
My problem is even 'worse'...i dont have enough models to be army list legal. More eldars or new army....hhmmm. Would love to take part. Failing which, Jeff do you need a grot?
ReplyDelete@Khairul- No, I don't think I need a grot. However, you're welcome to pull up a chair and paint anyway. Why not start a new army, like Tau or something? Just do the standard IP requirements. It's always nice to have more than one army... :)
ReplyDelete@khairul - you know that 2nd army you're thinking of starting ... IP's a great time to do it!
ReplyDeletefinnally a competition i have a good chance of wining, i am deffinetly in for this
ReplyDelete@Jeff- Questions.
ReplyDelete1) When is the dateline for regn. for the event.
2) Say we have 10 participants and all of them complete the painting on time, do they all get the Iron Painter award?
@deathkorps...i will be painting my new pure khorne daemon army..n i will paint it with all my heart man!!!!..no way im gonna miss this,,oww yeahhh :D
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDelete@Doc- People can sign up until we don't have any more room- up to a week before the event so we can plan for hobby space. Yes, all 10 get the Iron Painter award if they succeed. However, at the end everyone will vote for their favorite army, and the army with the most votes will win the Purity Seal. No, you can't vote for yourself (before anyone asks lol)
ReplyDeleteim in with kisses
ReplyDelete10 box of ork bikes - SEALED
30 bikers
i couldnt care less about winning
but i vow to have fun
so help me God
ps: come on everyone, help push khairul for a 2nd army!! he's been thinking about it for months now...do it bro!!
Haiya, Khairul, just start that new army you've always wanted... You can kill lots of stones 'ere with 1 bird... :D
ReplyDeleteYou know you can win with your air brush... Hahahahaha....
Arzmi, don't forget to dip your bikes, I assure you, you will finish them in one day when done with focus...
Jeff, do we have to submit a list to you? Though it would be too early to do so now as people will definitely change their mind about their list.
@Alvin- No, you don't have to submit a list prior to the event. You just need to bring one with you when you show up to IP.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason I'm so excited about this event lol. Since most of my unpainted stuff are opened already, I can't get the Adamantium Mantle award. However, I've divided my 30 model list into 2 parts, the first 500 points so I can at least get the basic award, and the extra 500+ for the Iron Halo.
ReplyDeleteTentative list:
505 points
Chaplain with powerfist
10-man Tactical Squad
5-man Scout Squad
5-man Assault Squad
618 points
5-man Assault Terminator Squad
Rhino
Land Raider Redeemer
Sergeant Telion
What's really scary is that I have a whole bunch more of models to paint even if I finish that list!
Oops, that list also includes Sergeant Chronus, which would be my 30th model at 1123 points.
ReplyDeleteI'm in for IP, not sure yet about Iron Halo. i'll bring my new IG for this. :)
ReplyDeleteInteresting. latest when we need to confirm our attendance?
ReplyDelete@Shaz- Looks like a good list for the competition- good luck.
ReplyDelete@Warpspace- I don't what else to tell you other than the answer I already posted in this thread to the same question. It's a bit early for signups but we'll take as many as we can reasonably fit in the space we have.
looks like i can't aim for the adamantine mantle or crux terminatus - since everything of mine requires Green Stuff... oh wells, the Iron Halo and Purity Seal will have to do :P
ReplyDelete@Dann- You'll get that Purity Seal only through ME, baby! I haven't won one yet and I plan on making this one my first! ;)
ReplyDeletethis is going to be so gd for me casue it is up to 500 points DOOM BELL is 500 points this is exalent for me, so i only rlly need to paint one models :)
ReplyDeleteCeiran, you need a minimum of 20 models... That Doom Bell will only count as 1...
ReplyDeleteLOL! then it's war, jeff! :P
ReplyDeletedamn thats fine i dont mind, 40 stormvermin should do fine aswell
ReplyDelete@Ceiran- Be sure you thoroughly read the requirements to avoid disappointment dude! Your Skaven force has to meet the legal requirements for a 500 pt army, which is a Hero and at least two Core choices.... FYI
ReplyDeleteyh i kno i already have my hero choice for this thing, but i want to keep secret until a closer date
ReplyDeletelol ok dude...
ReplyDelete@Jeff,Dann and the rest of you ladies- Have you all forgotten me. You can all forget about the Purity Seal and try for the other awards coz...the Purity Seal...is mine, baby.
ReplyDelete@Doc- Bring it, dude. The last thing you will see at 10:01 PM will be the business end of a wraithcannon going off...!
ReplyDeleteAll kidding aside, when you back in town dude?
You guys havent got a chance...
ReplyDeletethe Saim-Hann will be coming!!!
An autarch, some rangers, banshees and spiders.
Doc, i'll bring a milo tin seal for you. MUAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
just got back from a 3 days training, and I'm definitely joining the IP with my Black Legion
ReplyDeleteI will be back by the middle of Jan but might have to go and start-up another ship...date unknown.
ReplyDeleteHopefully it is not on the 20th of Feb.
But I am still undecided on what army to paint.
Will it be SM(or one of their variants) or IG?
Doc + SM = Cool.... What Chapter are you thinking?
ReplyDeleteDon't know yet.
ReplyDeleteStill thinking.....I wanna good side army and what we have is SM, IG, Tau and Eldar.
Give me some time...I will get around it. Well we have till Feb anyway.
I'm not sure if you know this. But Chinese New Year is on the 14th. And chances are not many of the hobbyist will be around.
ReplyDelete@Alvin- Thanks for the heads up, but at this point we're committed. Hopefully this being a week later won't hinder too many people...
ReplyDeleteI think I'll be back in time, though I'm still undecided what I want to paint yet. Either go for the purity seal or the adamantium mantle...
ReplyDeleteI'll be impressed if ANYONE pulls off Adamantium Mantle. Building and painting 1000 points in 12 hours is no joke! I'm beginning to have serious doubts as to whether I can even grab the Iron Skull!
ReplyDeleteare there still space for this competition? im interested.
ReplyDeletesure ...
ReplyDeletewhee! where do i sign up?
ReplyDeleteWe're going to go ahead and take advance signups right now. However, we will be sending out a confirmation email in early Feb that everyone MUST respond to. This will make sure that if the event is full, no one takes a spot that isn't going to show up (hopefully).
ReplyDeletePlease email Legio Malaysia with your name and you'll be all signed up. Or you can post your full name and email address in this thread- up to you guys!
