Another hobby night in the books

Hobby night was a little quieter than the last time, with 10-12 people showing up and playing games of Warmachine and 40K. Good times! As for me, I spent the evening framing a new 4' x 6' 40K table. This will be the first table we do that will have a little bit more of a theme, rather than trying to remain "game neutral" like our tables thus far have. The next one after this will be a dedicated Flames of War table, followed by another 40K table, or possibly a Warmachine one. Time will tell!

Also, Han joined up and became our newest Legionnaire Friday night. Welcome, brother! If you haven't joined yet, why not? Becoming a member confers great benefits, and allows Legio Malaysia to continue building tables, hosting activities, and run future events. Get in the game and support the Legion!

My First Full Hobby Night at the Legio

Last night was the first full hobby night for me at the Legio - and it was truly awesome! I arrived a little past 6, and Jeff and Saleem were already at the painting tables. Saleem was doing work on his Warmachine collection, while Jeff was finishing a couple of terrain pieces. I also got to see some of the models from his collection, including the Salamander marines that can be found in the 40k 4th ed rulebook.

After unpacking my Thousand Sons, Jeff helped with some tips on making an army base for them, for the up-coming tourney. That was interesting learning. We had the first Legio Malaysia members meeting, which had more people than I thought - which is great news. What was also great was that there many different kinds of wargamers at the meeting - veterans, not-so-veteran, 40k, FoW, Warmachine, other games, painters, etc. After the meeting, the Legio gained 4 new members - which is truly amazing!

I actually managed to squeeze in 3 games myself - vs Alterecho's BA, vs Lord Akarrin's WE and vs Dann's Necrons (which ended at 1:30am). There many other games going on - Tyranid vs Daemonhunters action, WE vs BA, BA vs Necrons, SW vs WE, Warmachine. I didn't see any FoW this week, but I know the FoW nutters are strong too. Nick Chew showed me his newly painted StuG - real nice job. I could also see the WIP stuff of the people going to the Singapore tourney, and it's looking good.

In all, 18 people were at the Legio last night, which totally blew away my expectations. Some familiar faces (dif2find, excise, alterecho, dann, lord akarrin, nick, iz, firaya, shazli, saleem, jaja, among them), and some new faces (to me, that is). I know the fabricator-general will have his work cut out for him to get even more tables and terrain out in the next couple of weeks, and I know he's going to blow us all away. Of course, if you'd like to help, just step up and say the word.

Anyways, I had a great time, and totally looking forward to more excellent stuff at the Legio.

Congratulations Shazli (firaya), Iz, Kadir and Shazli. Welcome to the Legion!

Firaya signed on as Level 3 member, and Iz, Kadir and Shazli all signed on as Level 2 members. I know that Firaya's Ultramarines are a force to reckon with, and I'm sure we'll see more of them. Iz' is known the world over for his preference for lots and lots of armor, which is why you would want to see his 40k IG and FoW Germans. Kadir's 40k World Eaters are ... scary. And I hear he has other 40k and WFB armies too - which we shall see on the battlefields of the Legio. Shazli's another FoW nutter who also happens to be in league with the 40k Necrontyr. All are dedicated wargamers in my book.

I think we're on to something here...

17 people turned out tonight for some serious hobby bedlam- AWESOME! We unveiled the new third table with some new scatter terrain as well, and we also held the first club meeting for Legio Malaysia. I'd say the meeting went well, because we signed up our first three members!

We'll post membership benefits and costs very soon, but the best thing to do is come out to a hobby night and see it all for yourself. Everyone had a lot of fun, and played a lot of games as well. See you next time!

Hobby Emergency Being Dealt With

Yes folks, I regret to say we experienced a "hobby shortfall" in the last Hobby Night. I'm ashamed to admit a couple of 40K players were forced to play on a bare, unadorned tabletop due to a lack of gaming space. Yes, I'm afraid it's true. However, we're not getting our heads down. We have lit the fires of the mighty Legio terrain forges, and even now we're building another two mini tables to make a third full sized temporary table. We're also building and painting more scatter terrain, including some Flames of War, Warhammer, and Warhammer 40,000 pieces. We plan to have the third table operational for this week's Hobby Night, and (crossing fingers) another 3 4x6 tables finished the next week for a total of six tables. By mid June, we plan to have 10 tables good to go for some truly awesome gaming times on Friday Hobby Nights.

So, please don't be too vexed with us. We're thrilled with the response we've gotten thus far, and believe me when I say that things are only going to keep getting better over the coming months.

Another great hobby night

Well, it seems like things are already starting to take off, because last night we nearly doubled the previous hobby night's attendance- sweet! In fact, we actually ran out of table space, forcing a mighty battle between the Inquisition and Chaos Space Marines to be fought on an improvised table! Several games of Warmachine were played on the forest table, while the Ultramarines and the Imperial Guard conducted a training exercise in the desert. I continued painting my Alpha Legion, and even remembered to bring the colors I forgot last time! Two are almost finished, but the going is slow... argh! :)

The Über House of Hobby

This morning, I visited one of THE best shops I've ever seen anywhere for advanced hobby work. Casting materials, specialized hobby tools, conversion materials, and everything in between. When Saleem, Andy, and I first planned this trip, it sounded like a good shop to visit. This place, Multifilla Sdn Bhd in Balakong, exceeded my wildest expectations.

If you're interested in getting just about anything for terrain or table work, this is the place. Want to sculpt figures? They have a massive selection of sculpting tools and putty. Plasticard, brass, tin, mild steel, brass etched goodies, acrylic rods, basswood, MDF board, etc, etc, etc...



The owner, Leong Boo Wun, was friendly and very knowledgable. Explain to him what you want to get done, and he'll take you right there. For instance, I told him I was looking for a resin to make water effects with. Not only did he present two different options, he also suggested that I use "glass microspheres" to simulate churning water. Awesome.



He also carries a large range of power tools specifically designed for hobby applications. His main range is a line of hobby specialist power tools from a German company called Proxxon. Lathes, routers, mini table saws, etc. He even has some of the Proxxon range open and available to try for yourself. I looked at a couple of rotary drills and was very impressed with the low noise, lack of lateral vibration, and overall quality. Wow, wow, wow.

If you checked out my recent blog post on making a mold, ALL of the materials I mention in there are available at Multifilla. Silicone RTV rubber, resin, clay- all of it. Nice.

Personally, I emptied my pockets there. I picked up resin for water effects, along with green, blue, and brown pigments specifically designed for it. I even managed to get a pigment that will make the resin glow in the dark- perfect for a 40K terrain piece of a toxic waste pool! Cork for basing, stainless wire I'll use to model radio aerials on my Flames of War tanks, rare earth magnets, and mild steel sheeting for my Defiler are just a few of the things I picked up today.

First Hobby Night a Success

I just got back from an excellent evening of Flames of War gaming and 40K hobbying. Iz and Shazli fought a full scale battle on one of our 4' x 8 1/2' tables. Saleem painted his Warmachine stuff. Andy built his first German list for Flames of War, and then immediately started putting his models together. As for me, I did my best to paint Alpha Legion, but forgetting Chaos Black and Goblin Green (a primary highlight color for the power armor) sort of did me in. That, and I couldn't help buzzing around, checking things out, chatting about the club, and eating pizza. Spunkybass also popped in to say hi and check out the action, so all in all I'm quite happy with our first hobby night.

Do yourself a favor and try and make it out sometime for a Legion hobby night. Bring your Flames of War force or any other army, and get a game or two in. Check the calendar frequently for updates, and get involved! :)

Legio Malaysia: My POV

You may have read an announcement recently about Legio Malaysia, the wargames club. Let me share what the vision is, from my point of view.
The Malaysian wargames scene is tiny, with gamers getting together in stores and in some cases homes to get their regular fix. In the Klang Valley, I know of at least 4 regular places where people meet to hang out and roll dice, and sometimes paint - in chrono order: Games Circle, Balau, Wolf Game's Shop, Comics Mart. On top of that, I hear rumblings of FoW games in other places in KV, as well as school history clubs. Then there's the scene outside KV. I'm sure there are many others, so if you know of any, just let me know in the space below.
Legio Malaysia is designed to be the central rally point of Malaysian wargaming. It's not meant to compete or detract from the other gaming places or clubs, but rather to complement them. It's where gamers from any of the existing gaming places can come and call it common or home ground, with excellent tables and terrain, superb environment, air-con, painting tables, fridge for drinks, shelves for models, domino's or mamak around the corner.
More than that, it's also an organization that strives to continually raise the bar of the hobby in Malaysia, and help its members get to and exceed the standards. While world-class tournaments, paint projects, large battles and other events serve to dot the club calendar, it's not an eltist club, and all wargamers - noobs to grizzled vets - are welcome. Noobs get to have on-hand help on getting started, including painting, army selection, tactics, etc. Veterans get to be constantly challenged in all aspects as the bar is raised to reach and exceed global standards. We believe it is a totally realistic target to expect Legio Malaysia members and events featured in places like White Dwarf and Wargames Illustrated.
And notice, it's not Legio 40k, or Legio WFB, or Legio-insert-the-name-of-the-game. Essentially, it's meant for all tabletop miniature wargaming. We'll start with the most popular - 40k, WFB, FoW, DBA, Napoleonics (ok, maybe not so popular, but I got oodles of Austrians ), then work our way to others.
Legio Malaysia is currently based at the Battlefront factory in Shah Alam. It's got lots of great tables, it's clean, air-conditioned, lots of parking and has the added advantage of making you feel like you are surrounded by miniature soldiers, AFV and planes. Sure, it may not be in central KL or PJ, but it's a start, and it's certainly the biggest regular wargames venue I know of in Malaysia.
So go check it out. Legio Malaysia wants YOU!

The Beginning

From humble beginnings may great deeds grow! :) It's our sincerest hope that Legio Malaysia serves as a springboard for growth, encouragement, and improvement of the miniatures wargaming hobby in Malaysia. By bringing together fellow hobbyists, we can share the experience and wisdom of our members, and use it to run great events, tournaments, and improve the hobby as a whole. We have only just begun, and we invite your feedback and support. The first event we'll be 'sponsoring' as a club is a Warhammer 40,000 tournament being held in Singapore on June 8th. All Malaysian competitors who have signed up are hereby urged to get in contact with me. We have a surprise for ya! ;)
